Mangalore : A three day sports meet of Western Range Home Guards was inaugurated at district police grounds on Nov 27, Tuesday.
A total of 12 events including Tug of War, Kabbaddi, Volleyball, Track events and others will be held for team from four districts – Dakshina Kannada, Karwar, Chikmaglur and Udupi.
The meet was inaugurated by Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof TC Shivashankarmurthy. The meet began with an inaugural parade by all participants.
Speaking on the occasion VC said that each person has to perform their duties meant for their profession, but the Home guards are posted in various professions to fulfill their duties and are trained for it.
He also said that Home guards can be said as unit, since they serve the country in addition to their own profession. The sports meet is necessary for the people since the development of education in literacy is not only enough but there must be development in cultural, physical and society.
Further the concept of sports school will be implemented to give importance for the sports, he said.
Guest of Honour DCP Dharmaiah said that the goal of any games must be participation and not winning.
District Commandant of Home Guards, Prof Dr Nidarsh Hegde welcomed the gathering and also introduced the events to the crowd. He said, in the past three years Home guards are doing their duties in various filed like coastal police, zoology department, RTOs, Tourism spots, KSRTC, Temples and 17 units around Dakshina Kannada.
