Mangalore : The local units of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bhajrangdal staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on March 1, Friday, to oppose the proposed moves of the government to demolish the Ram Sethu.
Addressing the protestors, MB Puranik,State Vice President of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad while referring to the filing of an affidavit by the Union government seeking the demolition of the historic Rama Sethu to facilitate water transport, said the VHP was strongly against the proposal and wants the government to drop the same and opt some other route.
He said the government should not hurt the sentiments of the people by demolishing the Rama Sethu which was considered sacred by majority of Indians.He also warned of a severe protest if the Centre failed to drop the proposal.
Manohar Tulajaram, District President of VHP also spoke. Gopal Kuthar, District Secretary of VHP and Bhujanga Kulal, Bhajrangdal Convenor were also present.
A memorandum was submitted through the Deputy Commissioner to the President of India and also the CM of Tamil Nadu with a request to pass a resolution in the Assembly to safeguard the historic Shree Rama Sethu.
