Mangaluru :Volunteers joined hands on Sunday morning to clean the Sasihithlu beach, off Mangaluru, which is to host the All Cargo Indian Open of Surfing from May 27 to May 29.
Organised by the Rotary Club of Mangalore, the cleanliness drive was attended by members of various associations and organisations. Though Sasihithlu beach is said to be a virgin beach frequented by very few people, the scenario was not different from many other beaches.
About 350 volunteers worked from 6 a.m. till 8.30 a.m. collecting nearly a hundred bags of rubbish, including beer bottles and other trash.
Still, trash was being washed ashore by the waves while the organisers decided to call off the event saying the minor rubbish could be cleared later.
The surfing event is being organised by Mantra Surf Club in association with Kanara Surfing and Water Sports Promotion Council and is supported by Karnataka Tourism.
