Mysuru : A day-long workshop, involving officials from municipal corporations in other states, is in the offing, according to sources. The workshop, tentatively planned for May 26, will be split between deliberations and field visits.
The workshop is mainly aimed at introducing the best practices in MSW, by setting up zero waste management plants, door-to-door collection of domestic waste and the recent total ban on plastic, complying with the government order.
The City Corporation , which has the credit of being the first among local bodies to enforce the total ban on plastic, will also educate about alternative measures in the absence of plastic carry bags to visiting delegates, besides regularly monitoring its enforcement. Carry bags made out of paper, cloth and jute, being promoted by the City Corporation in a big way, will be displayed in an exhibition planned as part of the workshop.
Sources told that, prominent among the representatives are officials from municipal corporations within the state and also from neighbouring Maharashtra, including Pune, Kolkata in West Bengal and other states. Each local body is expected to send two representatives, totalling not less than 150 participants.
As a prelude to this, the MCC is conducting various activities under ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. The recent is the theme-based cleaning that has entered its second phase with cleanliness works on at industrial areas.
City Corporation Health Officer Dr H Ramachandra said that the theme-based cleanliness drive started with heritage buildings between April 15 and 30. Now, from May 1 to 15, industrial areas are the focus.
Beginning from wards 42 to 45, where factories and industries are located, covering Bannimantap Industrial Layout, like the premises of Mysore Paints and Varnish Limited, a public firm, were rid of waste. Waste littered in the vicinity were removed with the help of pourakarmikas.
In coming days, cleanliness drive around the government offices, water bodies, parks will be taken up under the theme-based initiative.
