Udupi: The Udupi municipality has submitted a proposal to the Directorate of Municipal Administration for setting up a waste water treatment plant at Nittur here.

As per the proposal, the waste water treatment plant would be set up next to the Sewage Treatment Plant at Nittur. The municipality is generating sewage water of four-six million litres per day (mld).

An earlier proposal to treat water, pump and send it to a big company near Padubidri was not financially feasible. Hence, that plan was given up. The directorate had recently sent a letter stating that if the CMC were to take up any innovative project, then it could be funded under the Union government’s Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme. “Hence, we decided to send a proposal for setting up the waste water treatment plant at Nittoor to the directorate,” said K. Raghavendra, Environment Engineer, Udupi municipality. Again, sewage water from some wet-wells of the municipality overflowed when there was no power supply, to the low-lying areas. There were complaints from people living in the six municipal wards located downstream of Nittur of contaminated water flowing there.

The setting up of the waste water treatment plant would address this problem. The capacity of the proposed waste water treatment plant will be seven-eight million litres per day. “After the proposal is accepted by the directorate, a detailed project report could be prepared,” he said.

This waste water treatment plant would have the Sequential Batch Reactors technology. The treated water coming from this plant could be used for industrial purposes or for washing vehicles or even for flushing. It can also be used for watering plants and trees, said Mr. Raghavendra.
