Mangaluru : The city will be restored Normal water supply by Thursday evening, according to Mayor Kavita Sanil.
Water supply had been disrupted after two pumps at the Thumbe pump house developed a snag late on Sunday.
Addressing press persons here on Wednesday, she said that though the pumps were brought to order on Monday, the corporation faced power supply issues on Tuesday forcing the civic body to stop pumping.
The Mayor said that there was power cut from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday from the express power feeder. Later, there was low voltage and again, there was an electricity-related snag and hence, the corporation could not resume pumping.
The power supply issues were resolved at 1.20 a.m. on Wednesday with the help of engineers from Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd. and MESCOM. Pumping has resumed.
She said that areas in the higher reaches in the city could get water only by evening on Thursday. If people did not get water even then, the corporation would supply water through tankers and people could contact the civic body.
She said that of the 837 iron planks in the old vented dam, 600 have been removed.
As the old dam is on the upstream of the new vented dam, water level in the new dam has been reduced to about three metres to enable the workers to remove the planks as the old dam is under water now.
The old dam would not be in use from the next water storing season starting this December.
The Mayor said that she regretted that there was disruption in water supply for about two days in the city, though it was the rainy season. But it was not intentional.
To a question on illegal hoardings, banners and flexes of elected representatives in the city, she said that the elected representatives have a responsibility and they should understand that they should be role models to others and should not put them up. The officials “are under pressure” and are not able to remove them all completely.
