Bangalore : The Western Ghats Task force, headed by Kanara MP, Ananth Hegde Ashisara, has asked the state to improve the livelihood of tribals and others living in the rain-rich forest ranges.
Hegde met CM Yeddyurappa here today and sought a ban on large-scale mining in sensitive zones of Western Ghats, to protect ecology.
The Task Force called for a Land Use Policy for the delicate region to develop and sought special developmental grants for the purpose.
There is an active co-operative movement in coastal and inner districts, which can provide marketing facilities for products of the ghat area. There is dearth of farm labour in the region, which needs to be rearranged, the charter of recommendations given to CM today stated.
The charter called for special grants (not based on population) to skillfully develop the eco sensitive and rain-rich region.
