Mangaluru : No matter what field we are involved in, if we have knowledge of language and translation, we can make a special contribution to that field. In this regard, translation workshops are being organized across the state to develop interest in translation among youth, Kuvempu Bhasha Bharathi Pradhikara President Dr. Ajakkala Girish Bhat said.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating a state-level translation workshop organized by the Kuvempu Bhasha Bharathi Pradhikara and Kannada Sangha (Kannada Department) of University College Mangaluru here on Friday, he said that despite the increase in multilingualism, the lack of translators in the state is a matter of concern.
In his keynote address, Mumbai University Kannada Department Chairman of and retired professor Dr. Taltaje Vasantha Kumar opined that Translation is a natural process that starts from childhood because the dialects are different among coastal people. We should adopt the cleverness of Pampa, Ranna, Kuvempu and B M Srikantaiah in translation. “Content should not become pale like a translation after translation,” he added.
Mangalore University Registrar Dr. Kishore Kumar CK, in his presidential address said that translation is sharing of knowledge, a way to make the Kannada language even richer. Such workshops are essential to eliminate mistakes in translation, he said. Principal Dr. Anasuya Rai opined that translation can create lot of job opportunities.
Kannada Department Head Dr. Madhava M. K delivered an introductory speech and welcomed the guests. Student Pratheeksha P mastered the ceremony. Kannada Lecturer Dr. Venkatesh V proposed vote of thanks.

Literary scholar Janardhana Bhat Belman spoke on ‘Translation, a study’ while MGM College retired English professor Prof. G N Bhat spoke on ‘Kannada and Translation’. Senior Akashvani artist and litterateur Praveen Ammembala briefed on ‘Possibilities in Kannada-Tulu Translation’. St. Aloysius College Kannada Assistant Professor Dr. Sudha Kumari conducted a practical session.
Retired Professor and former head of Department of Hindi, University College. Dr. Muralidhara Naik delivered the valedictory speech. The retired head of the Kannada department, Dr. Rathnavati T was felicitated on the occasion. Principal Dr. Anasuya Rai, Kannada Department Head Madhav M. K were present among others.
