Udupi: Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis said on Tuesday that there were 9,78,503 voters in Udupi district — 4,70,730 men, 5,07,754 women, and 19 others — as on February 28.

Addressing presspersons here, Ms. Francis said the Election Commission had published the voters’ lists for the five Assembly constituencies of Udupi district (Byndoor, Kundapur, Udupi, Kaup and Karkala) for the Assembly elections, which will be held on May 12. The lists are available on the website: www.ceokarnataka.kar.nic.in and also with the booth-level officials.

Women voters outnumber men in all the five constituencies. Byndoor Assembly constituency had the highest number of voters in the district, with a total of 2,18,863 — 1,06,196 men, 1,12,653 women and 14 others. The total number of voters in Kundapur constituency was 1,97,061, including 94,653 men and 1,02,408 women.

Udupi constituency had 2,03,777 voters, including 98,759 men, 1,05,015 women and three others, while Kaup had 1,79,794 voters, including 85,446 men, 94,347 women and one other. Karkala constituency had 1,79,008 voters, including 85,676 men and 93,331 women.

The district will have 1,078 polling stations — 243 in Byndoor, 215 in Kundapur, 213 in Udupi, 203 in Kaup, and 204 in Karkala. Since Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) will be used this time, demonstration of how they work are being held at the gram panchayats. They will be carried out at all five urban local bodies also.

Since working persons cannot attend the demonstration during working hours, they can call these urban local bodies and demonstration will be held according to their convenience, the DC said.

With the announcement of the election dates by the Election Commission on Tuesday, the model code of conduct too had come into force. Fifteen video surveillance teams, 15 flying squads, 17 static surveillance teams, five video viewing teams, five MCC nodal officers, and five account expenditure teams will keep an eye out for violations.

The district administration has also started a toll free number (1077) at the Complaint Monitoring Cell at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, where people can lodge their complaints regarding voters’ lists and any violation of the model code of conduct. People can also dial 0820-2574920 or 0820-2574991 for the same, Ms. Francis said.
