Mangalore: The Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner (DC), Dr. N.S. Channappa Gowda, IAS, stressed on the point that better social awareness only can stop embryonic (in the womb) killing of (female) foetus before actual birth.
He was speaking in a workshop after he inaugurated it on Wednesday, at the information department Hall in city, organised by Dakshina Kannada district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Deputy Health and Family Welfare department together, about the 1994 Act relating to banning of gender search of foetus prior to delivery of the babies in hospitals of the state.
Gowda described the craze for knowing a child’s gender, even before actual birth, was itself a mental disease among parents and relatives at home.
Everyone knows the love a family showers on male progeny, but why the detestation against the femaly? Such lop-sides, biased affection for one eye, and disregard for the other, while looking at nature’s miracles, has to be overcome, and NGOs have to join hands with Health department, to decimate that bad feeling of differentiating between sexes, DC insisted.
The 1994 Act has to be brought into force, without fear or favour, in all society.
Strong punitive action must be brought on organizations going against this great law. Female kids had protective Government schemes like ‘Bhagylakshmi’ and ‘Jeevan Madhur’ insurance policy. Women are protected against indecency, Gowda observed.
Dr. Sangameshwar presided on the occasion. Health officer Jyothi welcomed. DHO, D.R. Srirangappa spoke. Jayaram Pujari compered.
