Udupi : Stage actress, film star and politician Umashree inaugurating the World Theatre Day celebrations organised by Amogha-a socio-cultural organisation in Udupi, on Sunday, told her audience that she was not moved by awards she wanted to learn more, and her experience on stage helped to live an actual life outside. She added that she cannot quit acting, for either politics or films.
She expressed the opinion that Indian Theatre did not grow to an international level, although artistes were there. But the traditional forms of art, like Yakshagana and Bharatanatyam, even Carnatic and northern music, flourished abroad in many countries.
To promote theatre, some best works that could provoke and attract spectators in India and abroad, were needed in various languages. She wanted the state govts., to take initiatives that promote all arts.
Lessons learnt on stage take an artiste on a long way and make them long lasting.
Umashree cited a lot of names that come from stage to film sets, as best examples of theatre craft.
Udyavar Madhavacharya, a well known theatre personality of the coastal belt, spoke on the occasion to say that theatre would be guiding light for social peace.
Kasaragod Chinna , a stage celebrity in Kerala, announced his plans to produce two more dramas, one each in Konkani and Kannada, with Udupi regional actors. Umashree honoured senior theatre personalities, Madhava Bahndari an Laxminarayana Bhat.
Director of ‘Amogha’ body of arts, Poornima Suresh presided on the Day celebrations.
