Kasargod: A youth was killed in clashes between CPIM and IUML workers in Uduma of Kasargod on August 2, Thursday. The clash, it is learnt, broke out when the Kerala CPIM was observing a protest against the arrest of its leader P Jayarajan in connection with the murder of an IUM woker named Abdul Shukur in February. Jayarajan, who was arrested on Wednesday August 1, has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days in the Kannur jail.
Soon after his arrest, CPI-M workers went berserk in Kannur and more than 20 offices of the IUML and the Congress in Kannur were attacked.
Thursday’s clash meanwhile resulted din the death of Manoj Kumar (24), a DYFI activist and CPM member. Two others namely Shivaprasad of SFI and Karunaker of CPM were injured in the clashes. Sunil, a cameraman of Asianet channel was thrashed by CPI(M) protestors.
It has been reported that the CPM leaders forced shut down shops and business establishments, Even buses were off the road. Stone pelting incident were reported near CPCRI rest house and several paces,. Even offices of new agencies like Mathrubhumi, Manorama, Madhyamam were also attacked. Police resorted to lathi charge and fired two rounds of tear gas to control the mob. Around 100 CPI(M) leaders were arrested including zilla panchayat president P P Shamala Devi. Across the state, CPI-M workers stopped private vehicles and put up road blocks.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Oomen Chandy has warned strict action against perpetrators of violence.
