Udupi: A troop of 14 monkeys, including an infant, died on Thursday at Sitanadi Nature Camp.
Locals found the monkeys dumped by the roadside at Someshwara Ghat, Nadpal, part of the Agumbe Ghat section, and shifted them to Sitanadi camp. However, the monkeys succumbed before treatment.Deputy conservator of forests of the Karkala-Kudremukh Wildlife Division, Ganesh Bhat, said: “It appears that the animals were poisoned at Hebri and dumped at the ghat later. When the locals found them, they were alive, but critical. However, by the time they were brought to the camp, half of them were dead.”
“Their blood samples have been sent to labs in Mangaluru and Shivamogga,” he said. A case has been registered with the Hebri wildlife zone forest officer.
