Mangaluru: A Clock Tower made of flowers will be a major attraction in the four-day horticultural and floricultural show beginning at Kadri Park here from Friday.
One of the city’s icons was the Clock Tower at Hampankatta, which was demolished about two decades ago for road widening works.
Now Mangaluru City Corporation has proposed to rebuild it under the Smart City Mission.
Addressing reporters on Wednesday, M.R. Ravi, Chief Executive Officer, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, said that 150 kg of roses and carnations would be used to showcase it during the show. It would be 14 ft tall and five ft wide.
He said that the show would be inaugurated at 11.30 a.m. on Friday.
It would remain open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. till Monday. There would be free entry for school students in uniforms, persons with physical disabilities and special children. Adults would have to pay ₹20 as entry fee and children would be charged ₹10. The CEO said that there would be a display of a model vegetable garden. Visitors would be enlightened on bee keeping, its benefits and value added honey products would be on sale.
Different nurseries would sell flower plants, manure, seeds, ornamental plants, fruit plants and the like.
There would be a food festival during the show. It would be outside the park.
As many as 40 self help groups (SHGs) would display their products. In all, 12 troupes would stage cultural programmes from 5.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. The Horticulture Department would felicitate five women farmers during the show, he said.
The Horticulture Department would conduct open competitions in flower arrangement, vegetable carving and flower rangoli in the park on January 26 from 10 a.m. The winners would be given away prizes in the valedictory on January 29.
