Mangalore : Shivaram, the driver of the Yeshwanthpur-Kannur Express train who averted a major accident, due to his alertness, was felicitated on behalf of SCDCC Bank in Mangalore on January 13, Sunday. It may be recalled here that Shivaram had applied sudden brakes on sensing danger when the train was inside a tunnel near Sakleshpur in the wee hours of January 4. His presence of mind had saved the lives of over 1800 passengers in the train.
SCDCC Bank Chairman MN Rajendra Kumar, Rajya Sabha Member Oscar Fernandes and Matti Lakshminarayana Rao, one of the passengers in the train, honoured Shivaram for his presence of mind.
Rajendra Kumar who spoke, said the felicitation was a mark of gratitude to the driver who has saved lives. Oscar Fernandes also spoke.
Shivaram who narrated the incident said he applied sudden brakes when he realized that the drain was on a downward movement near Sakleshpur as it approached the Soorikumeru tunnel.
Raju Poojari, Sudhir Hegde, Railway Dept officials, Rohan Monteiro, MD of Rohan Corporation, Naveen Kumar Soorinje, Vice President of SCDCC Bank were also present.
