Mangaluru: Supreme Court adjourned its hearing on Kambala ordinance passed to conduct the sport event in Karnataka earlier this year. Hearing a petition on Saturday filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) against Karnataka state government for its Kambala ordinance, a three member Supreme Court bench adjourned its hearing until November 6.
PETA in a petition filed on September 23, stated that the ordinance passed for conduction of Kambala in Karnataka has violated law. The apex court accepted the case in its file on October 23 for hearing.
A gazette notification passed on August 20 on proposed Kambala Act soon after Indian president gave his consent to promulgation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Ordinance, 2017. Karnataka state legislature should pass the same bill once again to implement it as an act in the winter session of the legislature scheduled in Belagavi during November, 2017.
Meanwhile, a victory day is scheduled on November 11 in Moodbidri to mark the restart of Kambala event after months’ long ban imposed by Karnataka High Court.
