Mangaluru : The Dakshina Kananda police are moving towards getting ISO certification for their professional approach and people-friendly processes.
“With this certification, we are assuring people of quality in our services. This is what people here desire and aspire,” said Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D., who had taken a similar initiative during his stint as the Superintendent of Police in Gadag.
Mr. Sharanappa said they had put in place a system namely for disposal of cases, serving of summons, proper marking and maintenance of seized property, prevention and detection of crimes, and follow-up of cases in courts. It includes providing good working environment in the police station. Measures were in place for police-public interactions too.
The e-beat system for patrolling and smart fleet card – a system to monitor and maintain police vehicles — were also part of streamlining the working.
Processes at eight police stations and four offices of Circle Inspectors in Bantwal, Puttur, Sullia and Kadaba, would be standardised. At the remaining five police stations and two proposed new stations, the step would be taken up after they get their own buildings, he said
Preparation towards getting certification had started eight months ago. As part of this process, they have formalised a way to investigate cases in a scientific way faster.
“In cases of rape, we ensure that they are investigated expeditiously and charge sheets are filed within a year,” he said.
They have resolved some differences with prosecution and judiciary to put in place a system of follow-up trial of criminal cases.
Details of all the criminal cases and other data have been digitalised.
Mr. Sharanappa said two rounds of audit have been completed and the final round was expected in the next few days to see compliance.
The certification ISO 9001:2008, which will be valid for three years, will be granted in a month’s time, he added.
The certification, he said, was a tool to boost the morale of policemen “as it gives satisfaction for the policemen for doing good work,” Mr. Sharanappa said and added, “There is added responsibility on the personnel from the units to maintain the quality for a longer period.”
