Mangalore: Ms. Bhavya G Poojarthi has been elected to Mangalore taluk Panchayat Chairmanship today from Kallamundkur, with 19 BJP votes.
She defeated Ms.Surekha Chandrahas of Congress who secured 18 votes in a sharp contest on Thursday afternoon.
For the Vice-chairmanship, Ms.Vijayalaxmi Shetty was elected by 19 votes from BJP, defeating Ms.Marina L.Veigas of Congress who got 18 votes. The winner is from Mogaru Ganjimath in Mangalore Taluk.
The voting at the contests, closely fought, was done by raising hands and counting them. Only ladies were eligible to contest.
Both the president (Chairperson) and Vice-president (Deputy Chairperson) are educated, Ms.Pujarthi holding a degree and Ms.Shetty upto seventh standard. AC Prabhuling Kavalikatti and CEO Vishwanath Pujari of Election Commission conducted the proceedings.
Padmanabha Kottari, BJP DK unit chief, Santosh Kumar Rai of Kurnadu, Sathish Kumpala, Chandrahas Ullal and other BJP well-wishers congratulated the winners after the election.
