Mangalore: The Queen’s Baton of Commonwealth Games entered Dakshina Kannada district via Gundya, Nellyadi on September 5, Sunday.
Prabhakar Sharma, Additional DC, on behalf of the DK District Administration received the the baton from Wing Commander V.N.Singh, the relay commander.
District in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar, SP Dr Subrahmanyeshwara Rao, DK Zilla Panchayat President Santhosh Bhandary, Zilla Panchayat CEO Shivashankar, Former Mayor Shankar Bhat, ASP Amith Singh, Navin Shetty and others held the baton before handing it over to Ganapathy Nayak, Silver Medallist at the Srilankan Sports Meet held in Colombo in 1970.
Speaking on the occasion Palemar said that its great honour to welcome the Queen’s baton relay to the district.
The relay was handed over to Vandana Rao, Shobha Narayan Manjali Bhargavi and Vandana Shanbhag on the occasion.
The relay later proceeded to Town Hall through Bejai Church Road, Lalbhag, PVS Circle, Ambedkar Circle, and Hampankatta. Wing Commander also handed over the memento to assistant commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalakatti, Zilla Panchayath CEO Shivashankar and Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh.
Various cultural programmes like cultural dance by team Sanathana Natyalaya, Taleemu by Rudranjaneya team of Kaup, Kangeelu dance, Dudi Kunitha and Tiger dance by Bajilakeri Kamalaksha were held.
Further the relay will move to Karwar, Goa, Kolapur, Pune and Mumbai, said Wing Commander VN Singh who has held the relay of 6 KM in Mangalore which is the 72nd day of the relay. People in every place welcomed the team giving homely experience and large numbers of children were seen standing in line holding the handmade posters which is really beautiful.
