Mangalore : Former union minister, Janardhan Poojary has urged the central government to question the verdict of 8-week stay granted by the Madras High Court on the death sentence given to the assassinators of Rajiv Gandhi, the former prime minister.
He was speaking at a press conference held at Press Club on Aug 30 Tuesday. He also stated that the Supreme Court had confirmed the death sentence to the assassinators as per the judgment of the lower courts. But the Tamil Nadu assembly has passed a declaration to search mercy for the accused, due to which the Madras High Court has granted an 8-week stay on the death sentence.
Criticizing central government for delaying assassins to give death sentence, he said that even Kasab and Afzal Guru, who cheated the country must be hanged without delay.
The accused have survived for 20 more years by extending court procedures, filing appeals, sending clemency petitions, and so on. He said the Tamil Nadu assembly has made a mistake by supporting the assassinators.
He urged the central government to take the action immediately because the assembly’s move to protect terrorists is not in the best interests of the country.
Suresh Ballal, Arun Coelho, Harikrishna Bantwal, and other Congress leaders were also present.
