Mangalore/Udupi : Rain since Sunday night brought some respite to people in Dakshina Kannada from the searing heat for the past fortnight.
The pre-monsoon showers lashed the coastal district bringing down the maximum temperature substantially, from 35.7 degrees Celsius recorded on Sunday, to 29.9 degrees Celsius. According to Indian Meteorological Department, Mangaluru received 16 mm rainfall till Monday evening. Thick clouds that enveloped the coast from early morning brought the much-needed drizzle, which later turned into moderate rainfall across the district.
With signs of rain from early morning, many ventured out with their umbrellas and other protective gear. However, those who came out unprepared got drenched in the rain.
Meanwhile, roads in Mangaluru city got flooded even as pedestrians found it difficult to walk through slush and also bear the occasional splashing by fast-moving vehicles.
The weather forecast for the region is: partly cloudy sky for the next two days with chances of rain or thunderstorm.
Consequently, the temperature too is expected to be pleasant, with the maximum being 31 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and 33 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
Southern parts of Udupi district such as Kaup, Padubidri and Hejmady received heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning on Monday.
According to reports reaching here, Kaup, Padubidri and Hejmady and their surroundings received rain for about an hour-and-a-half in the morning. However, there was only a light drizzle, with an overcast sky, for most part of the day in Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala.
The drizzle along with the cloud cover brought down the temperature. People, who were at the receiving end of the oppressive heat in the last few days, felt relief with the dip in temperature.
