Mangaluru : India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alert for coastal Karnataka on Monday and Tuesday (July 15 and 16). The alert is valid till 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday.
The IMD said on Sunday, July 14, that scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (above 204.5 mm) and sustained wind with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur over coastal Karnataka on Monday, July 15.
Isolated heavy to very heavy rain and sustained wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur over Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts on Tuesday, July 16, it said.
Coastal Karnataka recorded 1,313 mm rainfall against the normal 1,302 mm rainfall from 8.30 a.m. on June 1 to 8.30 a.m. on July 13.
Dakshina Kannada recorded 34.5 mm rainfall against the normal 43.6 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday. Udupi district recorded 68.9 mm rainfall during the same period.
According to Dakshina Kannada Disaster Management Authority, 37 electric poles and 1.85 k.m. long power supply lines of MESCOM were damaged during the period.
As many as two and 10 houses were damaged in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts respectively during the period.
Heavy rains accompanied with gusty winds lashed Mangaluru city on Sunday evening.
