Mangalore: Ecological experts and members of general public aware of ecological balance in nature, have discovered the Western Ghats as an ecologically sensitive zone that deserves preservation and careful maintenance and have urged the state govt. to protect the long line of Western Ghats for its precious wildlife and trees, as also water sources.
They held a public discussion under the auspices of Western Ghats Task Force, Ecology Experts Panel, and Forest department of DK in Mangalore on Monday at School of social works Roshani Nilaya Mangalore.
Dr.Harish Bhat of Indian Institute of science in Bangalore, participating in the discussions cautioned against Gundia Hydro Project which wipe out rare species of natural life in the region. Dr.Madhyastha and Dr. Sharat Chandra also spoke to explain dangers.
There are 250 flowering plants, 95 types of birds, 44 forms of colourful butterflies, and 55 species of Fish in a 700 hectare land that will be submerged by the ill-conceived project. Losses will be of 200 billion rupees per year. The power project is deadly to the bio-diversity, it is feared.Elephant-man conflicts will be intensified in due course. Thermal industries could cause acid rains.
