Udupi: Street vendors along with CPI(M) leaders staged protest against City Municipal Corporation for vacating their stalls, on Wednesday near service bus stand.
As the protestors didn’t take any prior permission to stage protest heated situation created at the place between CMC officials and protestors.
Protestors alleged that CMC had seized the fruits and other goods which were kept for sale near service bus stand without prior intimation. It was the daily food for many of the street vendors.
“Our shops never became hurdle for passengers or the movement of bus. Now CMC is asking us to vacate the place and to install the stalls where CMC has given approval. We have been here since past many years,” said protestors.
They further said that street bedors are buying fruits and other commodities on credit. The place where CMC is asking to set up the stalls is not a good place for trade. CMC is snatching the food of street vendors.
CPI(M) leader Balakrishna Shetty said that UPA led previous union government had implemented the street vendors act and CMC is destroying it. CMC is destroying the lives of street vendors instead of safe guarding them.
CMC President Meenakshi Bannanje, councillors and others were also present.
