New Delhi: He was garlanded, carried on shoulders, given Rs.30 lakhs in prizes and a necklace of 50 rupee notes, by his countless admirers, friends, and the sports Ministry, when Susheel Kumar, World no.1 wrestler from Haryana state returned from Russia, with a golden belt, and a cup as World Champion, in 66 kg, class of wrestling on Tuesday. Our own Minister K.H Muniappa received this Railway employee in Rail Bhawan and offered a cash prize (Rs.10 lakh) and mementoes. Susheel was delighted.
When other wrestlers, and weight-lifters added, were under dope-test failure sentences, Susheel showed how wrestling as a sport could change one’s life, by assiduous training, hard work, a good smiling nature, and strong youth, and take a person to the world class heights. The Sports Minister, MS Gill erred while discriminating between his present and past coaches, but Sushil kept his attitudes on fair lines.
