Uppinangady : A local court has sentenced two individuals, Rajeem, a resident of Ilanthila, and Mustafa from Kokkada, to three years of simple imprisonment along with a penalty of Rs 10,000 for their involvement in a robbery that took place in Ilanthila village on March 20, 2023.
The victim, Muhammad K., a resident of Kayarpadi in Ilanthila village, had secured a sum of Rs 10 lakh in a plastic bag, which was further placed inside a white cloth bag, to purchase gold ornaments for his daughter’s upcoming wedding. He was traveling to Uppinangady on a two-wheeler with his wife, Maimoona, to make the purchase when they received news near Saralikatte that his mother-in-law had passed away. Consequently, Muhammad diverted his vehicle from Pedamale towards the Saralikatte road to visit his grieving family.
Around 1:30 PM, as they reached Rifaee Nagar, Maimoona lost her balance and fell from the moving two-wheeler. To ensure she received immediate medical attention, Muhammad placed her in a passing auto-rickshaw and rushed to a private hospital in Uppinangady, carrying the bag of cash tightly in his hands. After she received treatment, he took her back home in the same rickshaw. Muhammad then returned to the spot where his two-wheeler was parked at around 3:00 PM, still carrying the cash. After paying the rickshaw fare, he approached his scooter and lifted the seat to secure the bag inside the storage compartment. At that exact moment, an unidentified man approached from behind, forcefully snatched the cash bag from his grip, and fled the scene. A case was subsequently registered regarding the incident at the Uppinangady police station, leading to the arrest and final conviction of the culprits.
