Manipal : Presiding over the District Road Safety Committee meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office auditorium on Wednesday, Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T. K. directed that speed governors must be compulsorily installed in all goods transport vehicles within one month. Out of 3,785 goods vehicles registered in the district, 1,952 have installed speed governors, while over 1,800 vehicles are pending. Emphasizing that strict adherence to speed limits and road safety regulations set by authorities in urban and suburban areas is key to reducing accidents, she urged all motorists to strictly abide by the rules.
Addressing issues caused by overloaded vehicles, DC Swaroopa noted that ready-mix concrete vehicles spilling material on roads damage infrastructure, while overloaded sand trucks pose serious hazards to the public leading to accidents. Over the past three months, officials inspected 1,569 vehicles, booked 15 cases, and collected ₹3.33 lakh in fines, with instructions given to further intensify inspections. Additionally, she directed Udupi City Municipal Council officials to relocate unauthorized roadside vendors and fast-food carts to six designated vending zones and construct shelters promptly. To streamline traffic flow across the district, instructions were issued to install traffic signals at remaining key junctions in Udupi, as well as major intersections in Padubidri, Kota, Brahmavar, and Kundapura.
