Mangaluru : The NSS Unit and the First Year Department of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, in association with the Kankanady Town Police Station, jointly organized an Awareness Programme on Cyber Security and Drug Abuse on 11th October 2025. The Chief Guest of the session was Ms. Vijayakranthi, ACP, Mangalore South Sub Division. The Resource Persons comprised Mr. Harish A, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, and Dr. Bindu Rani, Counsellor, LINK De-addiction Centre, Bajal. The programme was graced by Dr. S.S. Injaganeri, Principal, and Dr. Prashanth Rao, Head of the First Year Department and Dean of Student Welfare. Dr. Prashanth Rao welcomed the gathering and introduced the guests, emphasizing the importance of addressing the growing challenges of cyber threats and drug abuse among youth.
In her keynote address, Ms. Vijayakranthi shed light on the rising incidents of cyber fraud and advised students to verify the authenticity of online information. She stressed the significance of maintaining a drug-free lifestyle, believing in one’s potential, and focusing on personal and professional growth. Mr. Harish A discussed the technical dimensions of cybercrimes, elaborating on topics such as hacking, ransomware, phishing, and zero-click attacks. Quoting, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and only a few minutes to destroy it through cyber negligence,” he emphasized the critical need for awareness and responsible digital behaviour.
Dr. Bindu Rani addressed the issue of substance abuse, explaining the different types of addictive substances, their psychological triggers, and the behavioural effects they cause. She encouraged students to adopt healthy coping mechanisms and seek timely assistance when needed. In his concluding remarks, Dr. S.S. Injaganeri motivated students not to be disheartened by academic setbacks and reminded them of the importance of using technology responsibly. The session was highly informative and impactful, successfully raising awareness among students about the dual threats of cyber insecurity and substance abuse, and inspiring them to make informed and responsible life choices.
