Mangaluru : Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Narwade Vinayak Karbhari announced on Wednesday in Mangaluru that a ‘Maha Sabha’ (Grand Assembly) will be conducted across government schools and Pre-University (PU) colleges on November 14. This event is designed to be an opportunity for teachers to educate parents about the facilities available at these institutions, which is expected to help increase the enrollment of children. The CEO confirmed that this ‘Maha Sabha’ will be held across all government schools and PU colleges in Dakshina Kannada, following the directions of School Education and Literacy and Secondary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa.
Attendance for the event is determined by school size. At institutions with fewer than 80 students, all parents will be invited. For larger institutions with 100 or more students, the preference will be given to a little over 100 parents, especially those whose wards are in Class 10. During the event, parents will be informed about assessment techniques, the facilities at the institutions, the rights of the children, and details about the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO). Mr. Karbhari noted that while teachers are already conducting these awareness efforts at the school level, not all parents are fully aware of the facilities, assessment methods, and child rights and laws. The ‘Maha Sabha’ is an organized effort to reach out to all parents, and the administration will also be taking their feedback.
Students who have excelled in curricular and co-curricular activities will be felicitated during the occasion. Through this exercise, the government aims to increase student enrollment through positive word-of-mouth and publicity generated by satisfied parents.
Deputy Director of Public Instructions G. Shashidhar provided data on the student strength in the district. Out of 898 government primary schools, 63 have fewer than 10 students, while 116 schools have between 11 and 20 students. A total of 682 schools have a strength between 20 and 300, and 37 schools have a strength between 300 and 1,000. Among the 171 secondary schools, one school has a strength of less than 20, 148 schools have a strength between 20 and 200, and 22 schools have a strength between 200 and 700.
Regarding recent dropouts, Mr. Shashidhar reported that one of the three students who dropped out from the Bantwal block re-enrolled in Class 10. However, the younger brother, who dropped out of Class 9, refused to return to school. Another student from the Mangaluru South education block has moved out of the State along with his parents.
