Mumbai: The veteran actor and one of the most beloved stars of Hindi cinema, Dharmendra, passed away in Mumbai on Monday, November 24, 2025, at the age of 89. He had been battling age-related ailments and breathed his last after a period of hospitalization. His demise marks the end of an illustrious era in Indian cinema.
Tributes and Final Rites
Dharmendra, often fondly known as the ‘He-Man of Bollywood’ due to his striking physique and powerful on-screen persona, had been in and out of Breach Candy hospital in south Mumbai for several days before his passing. The news prompted a massive outpouring of tributes from every corner of the country. High-profile figures, including the Prime Minister and the President of India, offered their condolences, alongside major personalities from the world of cinema, politics, and sports. His legacy was honored as that of a “dashing everyman with the heart of a poet” who successfully translated raw, natural talent into cinematic immortality. His last rites were performed at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Vile Parle by his family.
A Storied and Enduring Career
Born in Punjab, Dharmendra’s career spanned over six decades, during which he starred in more than 300 films. He successfully navigated multiple genres, from romantic dramas to action-packed thrillers and comedies. He remains celebrated for his iconic performances in films like the perennial classic Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, Phool Aur Patthar (which earned him his first Filmfare nomination), Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Dharam Veer, and Jugnu. His enduring appeal was evident as recently as 2023, when he charmed new generations of audiences with his poignant and humorous performance in Karan Johar’s hit film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
