Mangaluru: Amidst the grand celebrations of Christmas across the coastal region, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, the Bishop of Mangalore Diocese, emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of love and respect for human life. Leading the solemn Christmas Mass at the historic Rosario Cathedral on Wednesday, the Bishop delivered a profound message of peace and communal harmony to the gathered faithful.
Reflection of Christ’s Teachings In his homily, Bishop Saldanha stated that followers of Jesus Christ stand as symbols of peace and affection in the world. He urged the community to live by the words of Jesus: “Love one another as I have loved you.” He highlighted that the contributions of the Christian community in India are immense, particularly in the sectors of service and social welfare, which reflect the compassionate life of Christ. Christmas, he noted, is a special call for everyone to mirror the virtues of Jesus in their daily interactions.
Building Bridges of Peace The Bishop further encouraged the congregation to act as messengers of peace and to serve as bridges connecting people of all backgrounds. “We must cultivate a culture that respects every human life and treats everyone with dignity,” he said. He was joined in the service by the Rector of Rosario Cathedral, Fr. Valerian D’Souza, along with Assistant Parish Priests Fr. Valerian Fernandes and Fr. Jaison Lobo.
Celebrations Across the City Christmas joy resonated across various prominent churches in Mangaluru. Special Masses and festive messages were delivered by Fr. Bonaventure Nazareth at Milagres Church, Fr. Benjamin Pinto at Urwa Ladyhill Church, Fr. Daniel Sampath Vegas at St. Dominic Church in Ashoknagar, and Fr. Vijay Victor Lobo at Kulur Church. Throughout the diocese, the evenings were filled with the melodic strains of Christmas carols and cultural programs. The festive spirit was visible as people exchanged heartfelt greetings and shared traditional sweets, known as ‘Kuswar,’ and cakes with their neighbors and friends.
