Mangaluru : Mangaluru witnessed a night of chaos as heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed the city in the early hours of Wednesday. The severe weather conditions led to significant property damage in several areas, starting with a major incident at Chammara Galli near Basavanagudi. At approximately 3:30 AM, a massive branch of a sacred fig (Ashwatha) tree suddenly snapped and came crashing down. The heavy branch struck two nearby houses, causing partial structural damage, and crushed three two-wheeled vehicles parked underneath, leaving two of them completely wrecked.
Fortunately, despite the severity of the impact, no casualties or injuries were reported as the residents were safely inside their homes at the time of the incident. The fallen debris initially blocked the local roads, leading to a tense atmosphere and disrupted traffic. Local residents quickly coordinated with municipal authorities and the Mangaluru police to clear the wreckage. Officials visited the spot to oversee the restoration of traffic flow and assess the extent of the damage caused to private property.
In a separate incident on the same day, a retaining wall collapsed near the Ayyappa Temple in Attavar due to the relentless downpour. The wall fell directly onto several cars parked in the vicinity, resulting in significant damage to the vehicles. Similar reports of tree falls emerged from Car Street, where traffic was temporarily halted. While the monsoon-like intensity of the rain has caused substantial financial loss to vehicle owners and homeowners, the city has fortunately avoided any loss of life in these rain-related accidents.
