Kasaragod : In a touching gesture of gratitude and affection, Sheela, the mother of the late truck driver Arjun who tragically lost his life in the Shirur landslide, handed over the election security deposit to AKM Ashraf, the UDF candidate for the Manjeshwar constituency. This emotional exchange took place as Ashraf was returning from seeking blessings from Panakkad Thangal ahead of filing his nomination papers. He made a special stop at Arjun’s residence in Kannadikkal, Kozhikode, where Sheela blessed him and provided the funds required for his official candidacy.
The bond between the family and the politician traces back to the harrowing landslide incident in Shirur, North Karnataka, where Arjun and his truck were buried under debris and swept into the river. For over 45 days, a massive search operation was conducted to recover his remains. During this period, AKM Ashraf played a pivotal role, stationed at the site as a vital mediator between the administrations of Kerala and Karnataka. His constant presence and efforts to coordinate the search were widely covered by the Kerala media, highlighting his dedication to the grieving family.
After more than a month of intensive searching, Arjun’s remains were finally recovered from the Gangavali River. Ashraf was instrumental in the solemn journey that brought Arjun’s mortal remains back across the border to his home for the final rites. Since that tragic event, Ashraf has remained a close confidant and a source of support for Arjun’s family. By providing his election deposit, Arjun’s mother has symbolically repaid the compassion shown by the leader during their darkest hours, turning a political formality into a moment of deep human connection.
