Mangaluru : A J Hospital & Research Centre, long known for its proactive adoption of leading medical technologies, has significantly enhanced its diagnostic infrastructure with the installation of two advanced and highly specialised imaging systems from Hologic, U.S.A. These crucial additions include a 3D mammography unit integrated with vacuum-assisted breast biopsy capability, and a state-of-the-art whole-body DEXA system. The new facility was formally inaugurated by Dr A J Shetty, President of Laxmi Memorial Education Trust, on November 28 at 10 am.
The Hologic 3D mammography system, utilizing Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), represents a major leap in breast imaging. It delivers high-resolution, layer-by-layer visualisation of breast tissue, a feature that enables improved detection and more accurate characterisation of lesions compared with conventional 2D mammography. The system also supports enhanced contrast imaging. Furthermore, its integration with a vacuum-assisted breast biopsy device allows for the precise, minimally invasive sampling of suspicious areas in the same setting. This integrated approach offers shorter procedure times and improved patient comfort compared with traditional stereotactic biopsy techniques.
In addition to the breast imaging technology, the hospital has installed the Hologic whole-body DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) system. This cutting-edge technology provides highly accurate measurements of both bone mineral density and detailed body composition, including fat, lean mass, and visceral adipose tissue, all using low-dose X-ray technology. These capabilities are vital for the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and metabolic disorders, and have valuable applications in fields including nutrition, obesity management, and sports medicine.
With the successful installation and launch of these specialized Hologic systems, A J Hospital & Research Centre reinforces its deep commitment to early detection, evidence-based prevention, and providing high-quality, patient-centred cancer and metabolic health services for the entire region.
