Mangaluru : The Dakshina Kannada District Conference of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) was held with purpose and resolve at Rani Abbakka Nagar stage, Bishop Jathanna Auditorium, Balmatta.
Writer and Professor Dr. Savita Bannadi inaugurated the D.K. District Conference of the All India Democratic Women’s Association by playing the drum.
The day-long event brought together women activists, writers, and community leaders who demanded justice in suspicious death cases, women’s safety and an end to rising communal tensions.
The conference began with a flag hoisting by district president Jayanti B Shetty and a welcome address by theatre artist Geetha Suratkal.
The term women’s rights has emerged because women have been kept away from their natural human rights, said writer and professor Dr. Savita Bannadi.
If there had been no such distinction, there would have been no need for such a separate thought or identification. A movement should be built keeping humanity as a model, this is very important. The patriarchal system should be eliminated from the home itself. Children should be raised in that regard, she said.
Key speakers included poet Chandrakala Nandavar, AIDWA state secretary Devi, and district secretary Bharti Bolara, among others. They highlighted the need to resist communal divides and protect democratic values.
Resolutions passed included a demand for a Special Investigation Team to probe the deaths of Padmalatha, Sowjanya, Vedavalli, and Yamuna, better implementation of the Shakti Yojana through increased public bus services, and stricter enforcement of laws to curb gender-based violence.
A new district committee was unanimously elected, reflecting renewed momentum in the local AIDWA unit. The event concluded with a strong call to “defeat communalism through unity.”
