Ullal : The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Ullal Taluk Committee staged a massive protest demonstration at Deralakatte Junction on June 5, 2026, pushing forward a series of major healthcare demands. The protestors fiercely advocated for upgrading Wenlock Hospital into a regional medical facility, establishing dedicated Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology centers in the region, and setting up a community hospital in Mudipu Hobli alongside a 100-bed government taluk hospital in Ullal. Additionally, they strongly demanded the immediate termination of existing memorandum of understanding (MoU) contracts signed with private healthcare institutions.
Addressing the gathering, DYFI Dakshina Kannada District President B.K. Imtiaz launched a sharp critique against the newly appointed Health Minister, U.T. Khader. Imtiaz urged the minister to cease favoring private medical colleges and instead channel priorities toward upgrading government healthcare infrastructure. He remarked that it is highly tragic that a region like Ullal, which houses four to five elite private medical colleges, still lacks a single government taluk hospital, while existing public health centers are being systematically handed over to private entities. He demanded an immediate revocation of all such private agreements to fulfill the public interest layout proposed by the DYFI.
Furthering the attack, DYFI District Secretary Santhosh Bajal took a swipe at the Health Minister’s recent media statement where he claimed that “people are important, not whether the sector is public or private.” Bajal pointed out the stark reality of the minister’s own constituency, noting that even after six years of Ullal being declared a taluk, it completely lacks an administrative complex, a government hospital, a public degree college, and basic public toilets. Mocking the minister’s rhetoric, he stated that there is absolutely no connection between the politician’s claims and the reality on the ground, vowing that the DYFI will sustain its agitation until these fundamental public health demands are met. The protest also featured an address by DYFI Ullal Taluk President Advocate Nitin Kuthar, with several district leaders in attendance, while Ullal Taluk Secretary Rizwan Harekala welcomed and thanked the gathering.
