Mangaluru : The School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru, vibrantly hosted a two-day Inter-Collegiate Powerlifting Championship starting March 20. The event was inaugurated by Mrs. Sonali Fernandes, an international powerlifter and alumna of the college, who lit the ceremonial lamp. Addressing the gathering, she emphasized that sports provide not only physical strength but also the mental fortitude required to face life’s diverse challenges. Dr. Gerald Santhosh D’Souza, Director of the Physical Education Department at Mangalore University, graced the occasion as the chief guest, urging athletes to maintain strict discipline and a healthy sporting spirit. Other dignitaries including Mr. Satish Kumar Kudroli, President of Powerlifting India, and Dr. Meena Monteiro, Head of the Post-Graduate Department, were also present.
The championship saw enthusiastic participation from 148 students representing 36 different colleges across various districts. In the men’s category, Mr. Siddharth Suvarna of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, clinched the ‘Best Lifter’ title by lifting a total of 826 kg, which included a record-breaking deadlift. Another standout performer, Mr. Prasad D’Souza from the host college, set a new Mangalore University record in the 120 kg category by lifting a staggering total of 860 kg across squat, bench press, and deadlift. Additionally, Mr. Vamshi from St. Mary’s College, Kalyanpur, also scripted a new record in the 120 kg segment.
In the women’s division, Harshitha V. Salian from St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru, garnered significant attention by securing the ‘Best Lifter’ award, lifting a cumulative total of 385 kg. The overall team championship in both the men’s and women’s categories was dominated by Alva’s College, Moodbidri, which secured the first position in both divisions. In the men’s section, St. Milagres College, Kalyanpur, and School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, took the second and third places respectively. In the women’s section, SDM College, Ujire, and Dr. G. Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College, Udupi, secured the runners-up spots.
The valedictory ceremony was attended by distinguished guests including former principal Dr. Jacintha D’Souza and Dr. Cecilia Farida Goveas, Registrar of Evaluation. The event concluded with a sense of pride as the winners were honored for their exceptional displays of strength and perseverance. The program was coordinated by Physical Education Director Mr. Sandeep Ullal, with students Ishika, Shirlin Maben, and Aparna Rao handling the welcoming and introductory proceedings, while Enika Shetty and Anne served as the masters of ceremony.
