Bantwal : A 70-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping into the Netravathi River at Sarapady in Bantwal on the afternoon of October 25.
The deceased woman has been identified as Meenakshi Poojari (70), a resident of Allipade.
She reportedly travelled from Allipade to Sarapady, visited a shop, and then proceeded directly towards the Netravathi riverbank.
The ferryman who transports people between Sarapady and Barimaru Kadavina Bagilu was present and asked if she intended to cross, but she declined, saying she would not be coming and remained there.
Shortly after the ferryman left for Kadavina Bagilu, the woman jumped into the river.
Some laborers who were extracting sand from the river nearby immediately jumped in and attempted to rescue her, but their efforts were unsuccessful, and she died, according to local residents.
Bantwal Rural Police visited the site of the incident to conduct investigations.
