Mangaluru: Kasturba Medical College Mangalore has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BEBIG Medical GmbH, a globally recognized leader in brachytherapy systems and technologies. This collaboration marks the establishment of a dedicated Centre for Advanced Brachytherapy Training at KMC Hospital Attavar.
Through this partnership, radiation oncologists and physicists from across the globe world will have the opportunity to undergo structured, hands-on training in advanced brachytherapy procedures. The centre aims to standardize high-quality practice, enhance clinician proficiency, and promote global knowledge exchange in cancer care.
Brachytherapy—also known as internal radiotherapy—is an advanced radiation technique in which a radioactive source is placed directly inside or next to the tumor. This allows delivery of highly targeted radiation to cancerous tissues while protecting nearby healthy organs, enabling better tumor control with fewer side effects, reduced treatment time, and improved patient recovery outcomes. Brachytherapy forms an essential component of treatment for cancers of the cervix, prostate, breast, and selected head and neck tumors.
KMC Hospital Attavar Oncology Centre has already gained recognition for its clinical expertise and academic leadership in brachytherapy. In the past year, the department has successfully conducted three international and national training batches, with participants from Botswana, Maldives, and multiple Army and Armed Forces medical institutions across India. The new MoU will significantly expand these educational programs, positioning KMC Mangalore as an important regional and global training hub.
