Mangaluru : Chamarajendra H., Commissioner of the Department of Public Libraries, Bengaluru, stated that today’s youth are showing an excessive inclination towards mobile phones and social media, moving away from the habit of reading books. He urged young people to minimize mobile usage and cultivate an interest in reading library books for 2-3 hours a day.
He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘Jnana Sangama’ program held on Monday at the Netravati Auditorium of the Zilla Panchayat. The event was organized jointly by the Department of Public Libraries and the City Central Library, Mangaluru, as part of the National Library Week 2025 celebrations for students.
Mr. Chamarajendra emphasized the importance of gaining knowledge on diverse subjects by reading books, stating that a better future can only be shaped through the path of knowledge. He added that books are instrumental in shaping one’s personality.
In his lecture, Barkur Damodara Sharma highlighted that books serve as a vital tool in preparing the youth for competitive examinations. He advised students to supplement their academic textbooks by reading books in libraries that narrate the life stories of achievers and convey good messages, ensuring they make life decisions with sound judgment.
The event also featured the felicitation of staff with the Service Award and the presentation of the Best Reader Award. Dignitaries present included Jayalakshmi, Deputy Secretary of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat; Jayakara Bhandari, Principal of Rathabeedi Government First Grade College; Gayathri, Deputy Director of City Central Library; and Mamatha, Library Officer of Udupi District Central Library, among others.
