Mangaluru : The Mangaluru City Traffic Police booked a lorry driver and officials of the National Highways Authority of India after a 44 year-old woman on a scooter was crushed under the wheels of a lorry when she fell off while negotiating a crater on Kochi-Panvel NH 66 near Kulur.
Madhavi, working with a private hospital in Kuntikana, was on her way to work at 8.30 a.m. when the incident occurred on the Udupi-Mangaluru carriageway of the NH between Kulur and Bangra Kulur.
The Mangaluru Traffic North police said Madhavi encountered a pothole near Gold Finch City grounds and fell off the vehicle. The lorry transporting fish driven by Mohammed Farooq drove over her, killing Madhavi instantaneously.
The police registered cases under Sections 106 causing death by negligence and 281 rash driving on public road of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and 198 A of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act against the driver and NHAI officials.
The NHAI officials were charged with negligence in not filling potholes and non-maintenance of the NH. Farooq was arrested and later released on bail.
By afternoon, NHAI personnel filled potholes at the location.
