Mangaluru : MLC Ivan D’Souza has expressed strong opposition to the removal of the iconic ‘MCF’ (Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilisers) name from the factory’s signage. Speaking at a press conference organized by the “Save MCF Name Action Committee,” he noted that the historic name has been missing since last October following its merger with Paradeep Phosphates under the Adventz Group.
Historical Significance & Emotional Bond: D’Souza highlighted that MCF, established in 1971, is a symbol of Mangaluru’s pride. For over 55 years, despite shifts between government and private ownership, the name remained unchanged. He emphasized that the institution was built on the sacrifices of local residents who gave up their land and environment. “Mangala Urea” remains a trusted brand among farmers, and erasing this name hurts the sentiments of the local community and the 500+ former employees now fighting for its restoration.
The Ultimatum: The MLC warned the management against changing the name under the pretext of corporate mergers. He cited the example of the Mangaluru International Airport name change as a negative precedent. D’Souza issued a “khadak” (stern) warning, stating that if the MCF name is not restored immediately on the nameplates, he would seek the intervention of the District Collector and the District In-charge Minister. He even threatened to personally lead a protest to the factory to remove any objectionable new signage if the management fails to comply.
Community Support: The movement is backed by the “Save MCF Name Action Committee,” including members like Maxim Allied, Mohammed Ali, and Isaac Vas, who demand that the factory honors its 55-year-old legacy and the identity of Mangaluru.
