Mangaluru : Dr. B. Devadasa Pai, a distinguished academic who has served as the Registrar of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and the Chief Administrative Officer of the World Konkani Centre, has been awarded a PhD by Srinivas University. His doctoral thesis, titled “Ammigele-Kodiyali Konkani Dialect: A Linguistic Study,” focuses on the unique linguistic characteristics of the Konkani spoken by the Gowda Saraswat Brahmins. This research was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Rajesh from Srinivas University and Dr. Desai from Goa University.
The study holds significant historical and academic value as it marks the first linguistic analysis in over five centuries of the “Ammigele” dialect. This dialect traces its roots back to the migration of the Gowda Saraswat community from Goa to Mangaluru during the early period of Portuguese rule. The research highlights that this particular form of Konkani remains closely linked to its Prakrit origins, preserving a foundational structure of the language that has evolved over several hundred years.
Remarkably, this achievement marks the second doctorate for Dr. Pai, who originally began his career as a Physics lecturer. He earned his first PhD in Physics Education from the University of Mysore over two decades ago, conducting research under the guidance of professors from NCERT. In addition to his research, Dr. Pai has also contributed to the academic field as a coordinator for the Post Graduate Department of Konkani at Mangalore University.
