Mangaluru: Dr. M. Annayya Kulal Ulthoor, former President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Mangaluru branch, has been elected unopposed as the State Vice-President of the IMA Karnataka State Branch, according to a release from the state organisation. The IMA, which is celebrating its centennial, is recognised as the world’s largest and most influential non-governmental organisation, with over 2,500 branches across India and several countries globally, including branches in every state, district, and taluk in India.
Dr. Kulal, who has been organisationally associated with the IMA for the past two decades, has provided effective leadership in Dakshina Kannada district, Coastal Malnad, and Mysuru divisions. He has served as a local branch president, regional president, public relations officer, convener, coordinator, and a member of the State, Central, and National Working Committees, earning significant public admiration.
He is the founder of the Kannada Medical Writers’ Guild in the state and was instrumental in organising and initiating the first-ever Doctors’ Literary Convention in Mangaluru in 2020. He has also organised several conferences for doctors and family physicians. Known for his work in organisation, medical service, writing, public speaking, and social activism, he holds the distinction of being one of the youngest doctors to receive the IMA’s District, State, and National level Dr. B. C. Roy Award for Lifetime Achievement.
An alumnus of KMC (Kasturba Medical College), Dr. Kulal previously worked at the Srinivas Institution and is currently serving at the Government Wenlock Hospital.
He is scheduled to assume office at the 81st IMA State Conference in Gangavathi on October 25. He has been assigned the responsibility and charge of strengthening the organisation by uniting doctors in the Belagavi division, which includes the districts of Belagavi, Bagalkote, Bijapur, Dharwad, Hubballi, Gadag, Haveri, and Uttara Kannada.
