Udupi: Senior ophthalmologist Dr. Nityanand Nayak of Udupi District Government Hospital took charge as the new District Surgeon (DS) on Friday.
The post had been mired in controversy for several months. The previous surgeon, Dr. H. Ashok, had refused to relinquish the post despite several transfer orders from the government. Although the government had issued transfer orders in January 2025 and February 2025, Dr. Ashok continued in his post. After the second order, he approached the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT) seeking a stay on the transfer. On July 23, the KAT dismissed his petition, paving the way for the transfer.
Even after the tribunal’s order, Dr. Ashok did not hand over the charge. Finally, the crisis ended when the government issued a strict transfer order for the third time, directing him to report to the Commissionerate of Health and Family Welfare Department without giving him any new post.
