Mangaluru : The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mangaluru unit has intercepted and seized foreign currency valued at approximately ₹80 lakh at the Mangaluru International Airport. Based on specific intelligence, DRI officials intercepted three passengers—one man and two women from Kerala—at the departure hall on February 27 as they were preparing to board a flight to Abu Dhabi. Upon a detailed inspection of their hand luggage and check-in bags, officials discovered various foreign currencies, including US Dollars, Pound Sterling, Saudi Riyals, and UAE Dirhams, which had been cleverly concealed to evade detection.
All three individuals have been arrested under the Customs Act of 1962 and have subsequently been remanded to judicial custody by the court. Following the seizure, the DRI has intensified its investigation to uncover the broader network involved in this smuggling operation and to identify the primary investors behind the illegal transit. Authorities are currently working to trace other members of this syndicate as part of their ongoing efforts to curb the illegal outflow of foreign exchange from the region.
