Mangaluru : A fully equipped electronic driving test track centre built at a cost of Rs 7 crore at Kambalapadavu, on the outskirts of Mangaluru. The new centre can complete a driving test in just 10 minutes
Mangaluru has long lacked a proper driving test facility. Work on the new centre began in 2019 and construction was completed in 2022. In 2024, installation of electronic systems was done. However, the centre remained closed.
The centre is expected to reduce the role of middlemen and speed up the process for citizens to obtain driving licences. Constructed by KSRTC, the centre has been handed over to the RTO. A private firm will handle the ongoing operations and maintenance.
The test track is fully interlocked and well designed for driving. Basic facilities like drinking water, rest areas, and toilets have also been provided.
Two test tracks are provided for two-wheelers and five tracks for light motor vehicles, allowing multiple tests to run at once. Each test stage takes around 2–3 minutes, so one person’s entire test can be completed in 10–12 minutes.
After completing the LLR (Learner’s Licence) period, applicants must book a date for the driving test online at the RTO. On the appointed day, they must visit the Kambalapadavu centre to appear for the test. Sensor-based poles have been installed across the track. Touching these during the test is considered a foul. Exceeding the permitted number of fouls will lead to failure and the candidate will need to reattempt the test. Those who pass the test will receive their licence approval online within minutes. Licence cards will be issued on the spot. In case of delay, they will be delivered by post.
