Mangaluru :In a major twist to the suspicious death of an 86-year-old man in Mangaluru, police have decided to exhumation and perform an autopsy on his remains. Albert Rego, a resident of Kottara 1st Cross near Bejai Kapikad, died under mysterious circumstances on July 19, 2026. The Urwa Police Station registered a case following allegations that his daughter tortured and murdered him to grab his property. The exhumation process is scheduled for October 9 at the Derebail Church Cemetery under medical supervision and court directions to ascertain the exact cause of death.
According to the complaint filed by family associate Harold Pereira, the accused daughter, Maya Rego (A1), had been physically and mentally harassing her father for years to transfer his assets. Under threat and coercion, Albert Rego reportedly executed a will transferring his property to her name. Despite having no prior illnesses, he suddenly passed away, after which Maya Rego hurriedly buried the body without informing or showing the deceased to other family members and relatives, raising grave suspicions of foul play or poisoning.
Human rights activist Ajoy Christopher D’Silva, a resident of Bejai Anegudde, along with Harold Pereira, submitted petitions to the Police Commissioner’s office highlighting these anomalies and questioning the initial handling of the case. Recognizing the serious doubts surrounding the senior citizen’s sudden death, the Police Commissioner directed the exhumation and post-mortem examination. Police officials stated that further legal action will be initiated once the autopsy report is received.
