Belthangady: The repeated appearance of a large herd of wild elephants in Mittabagilu village of Belthangady taluk has caused significant apprehension among local residents. According to information provided by villagers, an estimated 13 elephants, including two Baby elephant, are currently moving through the area.
On the evening of November 8, a group of eight elephants, also including calves, was spotted in the Malejodi region. The herd subsequently moved through various localities, including Hindukodi, Amai, Koodala, and Bediguttu. Forest Department officials, with crucial assistance from the residents, were successful in driving the elephants back toward the forest. Fortunately, no damage to crops has been reported thus far.
In response to the growing concern, the Mittabagilu Gram Panchayat has issued an advisory urging residents to exercise caution. Villagers have been specifically instructed to avoid entering forest areas and to remain vigilant, especially during vulnerable hours.
Isolated Sightings Reported Near Dharmasthala
In addition to the main herd, isolated elephant sightings have also been reported in the vicinity of Dharmasthala. On Saturday around 4 PM, a solitary elephant was seen near Mulikkaru in Dharmasthala. Although no damage was recorded, Forest Department sources confirmed that the elephant moved towards the Bolmanaru and Periyadka areas afterward. Furthermore, another elephant is currently reported to be roaming in the Padavu region.
