Ullal : A fire broke out on the ground floor of a five-storey private building owned by Venugopal Shetty, near Deralakatte junction around 7:45 pm on last night.
Swift action by local residents helped contain the flames using extinguishing materials sourced from a nearby petrol pump. The fire reportedly originated from the switchboard due to a short circuit.
A total of 140 female students residing in the upper floors were safely evacuated and relocated to other hostels by the institution.
The fire and emergency service personnel arrived late, drawing criticism from locals.
According to tahsildar Puttaraju, although the electrical panels on the ground floor were completely destroyed, no one was injured in the incident.
Konaje police arrived the spot.
